Jobless claims surge to a 16-year high
CNNMoney (November 20, 2008) - The U.S. Department of Labor reported Thursday that initial filings for state jobless benefits increased by 27,000 to 542,000 for the week ended Nov. 15. This marks the third time since 1992 that initial claims have exceeded 500,000. Claims are at the highest total since the week ended July 25, 1992, when 564,000 initial claims were filed.

Bil-Jax: Greener in just one month
Access International (November 20, 2008) - U.S. scaffold and access platform manufacturer, Bil-Jax has released the first report from its Go Green Committee. The company has announced a reduction in solid waste and a substantial increase in materials recycled. In its first month, Bil-Jax employees recycled 3.67 tons of material, committee member Cari Weidner said.

International Rental News (November 21, 2008) - RSC Equipment Rental has promoted Gordon McDonald to vice president of managed services, in charge of RSC's ‘Total Control' equipment management software. He was previously director of managed services.

Engine Manufacturers Ready to Implement 2010 Heavy-Duty Vehicle Emissions Standards
PRNEWSWIRE (November 20, 2008) - The Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA) today affirmed that its members are on schedule and ready to meet EPA's stringent 2010 emission standards for heavy-duty engines. Engine manufacturers have invested heavily in engineering technological solutions and design changes to meet the new NOx emission standard that is required for 2010 model-year engines and see no technological barriers to meeting the standard.

Mitsui Mining to partner with UK firm for urea sensors
Trading Markets (November 21, 2008) - Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co. (TSE:5706) on Thursday said it will partner with Gentech International Ltd. of the U.K. in the business of urea sensors for large diesel engine exhaust gas cleaning systems. The two companies will work together to develop and sell products that combine sensors created by Mitsui Mining with module products developed by the British company. Samples will start shipping in January 2009.

Terex announces plans to cut 130 jobs at Scottish plant
Contract Journal (November 21, 2008) - Plant manufacturer Terex has told staff at its construction equipment plant in Lanarkshire that 130 jobs are at risk. Workers at the Newhouse plant which produces articulated dump trucks and scrapers were informed of the move yesterday.

Volvo, Mack Launch Reman Programs For Diesel Particulate Filters
Diesel Progress (November 19, 2008) - Volvo Trucks North America and Mack Trucks, both part of the Volvo Group, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of trucks, buses and construction equipment, diesel engines and drive systems for marine and industrial applications, announced that they have launched a large-scale program to remanufacture diesel particulate filters (DPF). The program for both manufacturers will operate out of the Middletown Remanufacturing Center (MRC) in Middletown, Pa.

Atlas Copco To Acquire Aggreko’s European Compressor Rental Business
Diesel Progress (November 21, 2008) - Atlas Copco said it has agreed to acquire the European oil-free air compressor rental business of Aggreko plc, expanding the Atlas Copco Specialty Rental division. The total purchase price is €14.6 million ($18.2 million).

National to close articulated boom truck line 21 November 2008
Cranes Today (November 21, 2008) - Manitowoc's boom truck brand National has announced it is winding up its articulated boom truck line at the end of 2008. In a statement, the company said the decision to close the line "is simply a management decision related to market positioning of the National Crane brand."

General Dynamics Buying AxleTech
Diesel Progress (November 19, 2008) - General Dynamics and private equity firm The Carlyle Group, said they have entered into a definitive agreement in which General Dynamics will acquire AxleTech International for an undisclosed price. AxleTech is a global manufacturer of axles, axle components, independent suspensions, brakes and aftermarket parts for military vehicles, commercial specialty trucks and off-highway equipment in construction, material handling, forestry, mining and agricultural markets.
